HARTSELLE — A Decatur man thrown from his vehicle during a crash died, apparently while en route to the hospital Wednesday, authorities said.
Driver George Belchic, 46, was ejected in the single-vehicle wreck on Vaughn Bridge Road at 1 p.m., state troopers said.
Firefighters said a medical helicopter took Belchic from the scene.
He was pronounced dead in Huntsville Hospital's trauma room, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Stephen Maples, Oak Ridge volunteer fire chief, said he and his wife, Jamie Maples, arrived on the scene near Taylorville Private Drive to find Belchic breathing but non-responsive, lying about 20 feet from the vehicle.
Jamie Maples said it appeared Belchic's westbound vehicle struck a culvert.
"There were car parts strewed for several hundred yards. I have never in my life seen a wreck where there were car parts strewn like that," she said.
"Witnesses said that it flipped through the air," Stephen Maples said. "It tore the whole driver side off of it."
He was not wearing a seat belt, state troopers said.
