A Decatur man was killed in a rush-hour wreck Thursday when his vehicle skidded off Alabama 20.

The vehicle driven by Cortney Henderson, 21, left Alabama 20 at about 5:50 p.m. near Nichols Aluminum.

The four-door compact vehicle was eastbound in the left lane when it suddenly veered across the right lane and off the road at a slight angle. It traveled about 100 feet through a grass-covered ditch and turned sideways before the driver-side door struck a telephone pole.

Henderson's head hit the wood pole and an inch-long metal fastener, Decatur police said. The victim was unresponsive at the scene.

Foggy weather conditions prevented MedFlight from transporting the victim by helicopter.

An ambulance took him to Decatur General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Passenger Jessica Harris, 24, of Hartselle, was injured, state troopers said.

She was transported to Decatur General by ambulance for treatment for some cuts and non-life threatening injuries, police said.

No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Troopers were investigating the cause and said neither
occupant was wearing a seatbelt.
