Decatur to interview police chief candidates

By Chris Paschenko · 340-2442

Three candidates, vying to become Decatur’s next police chief, have separate interviews scheduled Monday.

The City Council will interview Ken Collier, Decatur’s deputy chief; Tom Little, a retired chief deputy from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department; and Francis Donchez Jr., former commissioner of police in Bethlehem, Pa.

Council President Billy Jackson said the interviews will begin at 4 p.m. at City Hall and last about 45 minutes per applicant.

Police Chief Joel Gilliam announced his retirement in November and delegated his duties to Collier on Jan. 31 until his Feb. 23 retirement.

Jackson didn’t say when the council will hire a chief.

“I’d like the council to discuss what they’ve heard, go back through the resumes again and get together later in the week to make a recommendation at that time,” Jackson said.

“They’ll either narrow it down, or undergo another round of interviews. It depends on the council members.”

A council work session is scheduled to follow the
interviews at 6:30, which includes the following agenda items:
