Historic district opposes group home

ATHENS — Houston Street's historic district is opposing a proposed group home planned adjacent to the district.

On Monday, resident Donna French told the Athens City Council that the residents received a letter stating the group home would be at 511 Patton Circle near Houston Memorial Library. The unoccupied home is in a medical district.

The letter, from a Kevin Steuart, stated the home would be for the elderly and handicapped. Steuart is seeking conditional use approval from the city's Zoning Board of Adjustments.

Councilwoman Milly Caudle said the residents need to first address their concerns to the board at its Thursday meeting, but added that, "I don't think this belongs in a high-density residential area."

Residents at the Monday's meeting said they are concerned about the home being near a day-care center and their own homes because they don't know what type of clients may live there.

French said she was told it would house up to 10 people. She and other residents plan to take their concerns to the board meeting.
