Somerville volunteers get grant

Somerville Area Volunteer Services will receive $81,786 from a federal firefighters grant program, U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt announced Wednesday.

Aderholt, R-Haleyville, said the one-year grant is part of the fiscal 2006 assistance to firefighters program and will help the department enhance its fire and emergency response capabilities.

Somerville's grant is part of a $485 million congressional appropriation to volunteer fire departments and emergency response units.

"Our local rescue squads do a tremendous job protecting our communities with limited resources," said Aderholt. "I'm committed to doing everything within my power to see that they receive additional funding so that they can do their job efficiently and safely."
