A tree grows at Austinville Park

Decatur recognized Arbor Day on Thursday with the planting a yoshino cherry tree and an October Glory maple tree at Austinville Park. The Frances Nungester Naturals provided music for the ceremony while the Straw Hat Garden Club reviewed the history of Arbor Day and helped plant the trees with Mayor Don Kyle.

The ceremony also recognized that Decatur once again received a Tree City USA Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation. To qualify, a city must have a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a community forestry program with an annual budget of a least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
