Browns Ferry Unit 2 down for tune-up

ATHENS — Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant's Unit 2 is down, but only because, like a car, it needs regular tune-ups.

Tennessee Valley Authority spokesman Gil Francis said Unit 2 came down at 9 a.m. Tuesday as scheduled.

While the unit is down, workers will do needed maintenance work.

"This something we do every 18 to 24 months," Francis said. "We do it in the fall or spring, like a regular car tune-up."

TVA conducts such outages in the spring or fall when electricity demand is less. While the unit is down, TVA will rely on Unit 3 and its other facilities to meet power needs.

Francis said he does not have a time line for when Unit 2 will restart. He said that would depend on the amount of maintenance needed.
