Louisiana group lobbies in Germany for steel mill

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. Kathleen Blanco took six state lawmakers with her to Germany in her bid to woo a major steel manufacturer to build its new $2.9 billion plant in south Louisiana.

Louisiana and Alabama are competing for the new facility to be built by Duesseldorf-based steel maker ThyssenKrupp AG — and the 2,700 steel-making jobs that come with it.

"I have included key legislative leaders in this final phase of the competition, and together with Economic Development Secretary Mike Olivier, I am confident my unified economic development team will successfully pitch Louisiana as a great place for this new industry," Blanco said in a statement released by her office.
