Authorities find Moulton escapee

MOULTON — Authorities located a Moulton escapee Thursday after residents reported a man wearing a hospital gown running behind their homes.

David Allen Jones, 26, of 234 Morgan Street, Apartment C5, escaped from custody while getting treatment at the Lawrence Medical Center at about 4 p.m. Thursday.

Deputies had arrested Jones on Wednesday for failure to pay child support. Jones required medical treatment for a previous condition, so a deputy escorted him to the hospital. The officer walked down the hallway after a doctor attached medical equipment to Jones, said Sheriff Gene Mitchell.

"The deputy didn't expect him to walk out with tubes in him, but he just jumped off the doctor's table and took off out the door with his gown and everything," he said.

Jones ran about a mile away to Chickasaw Apartments, where his mother lives, on Morgan Street, said Mitchell. Residents called police after seeing him running behind the apartment complex. Deputies, along with Moulton police officers, responded and arrested Jones within an hour after his escape. He was returned to Lawrence Medical Center to complete treatment and put back in jail at about 7:30 p.m.

Mitchell said Jones' escape didn't make sense.

"He probably would've gotten out (Friday) as soon as he talked to the judge," he said. "He wasn't looking at any jail time or anything."

Police charged Jones with third-degree escape. He remained in the Lawrence County Jail on Thursday evening. Bond had not been set.
