Blaze damages home, injures 1

PHENIX CITY (AP) — A man escaped a fire that broke out in his home but a Phenix City firefighter responding to the blaze was injured.

Edgar Muhammad said he was in his bedroom about 2 p.m. Sunday when the fire began. "I heard a noise in the house like someone moving something," he said.

Muhammad said he crouched low to the ground and got out of the house when he realized it was on fire.

An EMS worker on the scene said one firefighter was taken to the hospital. The extent of injuries to the firefighter wasn't known.

Attempts to reach fire officials were not immediately successful Monday.
