Trial begins in Moulton dad's beating death

MOULTON — The trial began Monday for a Moulton man accused of beating his 72-year-old father so severely his injuries resulted in death.

Connie Ray McLemore, 43, of 16540 Alabama 24, is charged with manslaughter in an incident that began when he borrowed his father's Jeep without permission, authorities said.

Cecil McLemore called his son Sept. 20, 2005, and demanded he return the vehicle, police said. Connie Ray McLemore allegedly beat his father with his fists when he returned the Jeep, authorities said.

The beating left Cecil McLemore severely injured. After multiple surgeries at Huntsville Hospital, he went into a coma and never awakened. He died Oct. 5, 2005.

Police initially charged Connie Ray McLemore with domestic violence. They changed the charge to manslaughter after the death.

The penalty for manslaughter is two to 20 years in prison.

Testimony for the trial begins Tuesday in Lawrence County Circuit Court.
