Owners preparing Decatur's AmSouth building for market

There's no buyer for AmSouth's main Decatur office, but its owner has been busy getting it ready for market.

Surveying crews have been working at the eight-story building at Holly Street Southeast and Second Avenue. The Decatur icon became surplus property when Regions Financial Corp. merged with AmSouth Bancorporation last year. Regions' main office is two blocks away.

Regions' Birmingham-based spokesman Rick Swagler said there is not a buyer, but the bank has been preparing the building for sale. RBC Centura, which bought AmSouth's Danville Road Southwest branch, has said it was interested in the building. RBC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Bank of Canada.

Federal authorities required AmSouth to divest the Danville Road branch as a condition of the merger, but did not require divestment of AmSouth's main office.
