Perfect pears

These Bradford pear trees lining Fifth Avenue Southeast flowered a bit later than in some years but still in plenty of time to greet the first day of spring next week (March 21).

This disease-resistant tree has been growing in popularity for lining drives, streets and yards because of the showy white flowers, but it sometimes succumbs to strong March winds and doesn't produce pears to munch for lunch.
