Athens council approves VFW alcohol sales

ATHENS — A veterans group received approval Monday to sell alcohol, despite the concerns of Athens City Council President Harold Wales.

The council voted 3-1 to give the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4765 an alcohol license. Wales was the "no" vote.

He called veterans special and said, "This is not a personal thing."

"They meet all the legal obligations, but I do not want to put alcohol in a residential area," Wales said.

The VFW is at 18615 Alabama 127, north of downtown. There are both businesses and homes along Alabama 127.

Wales said at a previous public hearing on the request that he's concerned about parties and people drinking and then getting on the major highway.

Roy Coulter, secretary/treasurer for the VFW, said at the public hearing that the organization does not rent out its facility, and it would serve alcohol only to members or guests. He said the VFW wants to serve only beer, not hard liquor.

Coulter said the VFW will not sell alcohol while operating its bingo games.
