Man convicted of manslaughter in Opelika teen's shooting death outside club

OPELIKA (AP) — Lee County jurors on Wednesday convicted an Opelika man on a lesser charge of manslaughter in the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy outside a nightclub.

Steven Wayne Jackson, 22, went on trial for murder in the April 13, 2005 death of Demarcus "Duke" Wright.

Jackson, whose defense contended that he fired shots to defend his brother, will be sentenced April 27, and could face a maximum of 20 years in prison.

An eighth-grader at Opelika Middle School, Wright died from multiple gunshot wounds sustained behind the Southwest Social Club in Opelika.

Jackson's brother, Carlton Jackson, also suffered a gunshot wound to the calf in the incident.
