MONTGOMERY — A Decatur senator will represent Alabama on a Tennessee Valley Authority board that advises the utility on natural resource management.

Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, will serve as Gov. Bob Riley's appointee to the TVA Regional Resource Stewardship Council, the same position that former Sen. Tommy Ed Roberts, D-Hartselle, previously held. Orr said he is honored to serve on the council.

Orr said he wants to make sure that people who live in the Tennessee Valley have a voice on issues affecting access to the Tennessee River.

He said river issues are important because of the river's impact on the area's industrial development, navigation and recreation.

Riley said he is confident the freshman senator will serve the state well because of his leadership abilities and "commitment to serving the best interests of citizens in the Tennessee Valley."

The council advises TVA on public land planning and management, dam and reservoir operations, water supply, and recreation. The 20-member council also includes representatives from the six other states that TVA serves.
