Downtown merchants presenting Shamrock Saturday

By Paul Huggins ˇ 340-2395

The luck of the Irish could put a $500 gift certificate in one shopper's hands this weekend when the Downtown Merchants Association presents its first Shamrock Saturday.

Thirty-five merchants will offer sales and specials, including green beer at some restaurants as part of the St. Patrick's Day celebration.

"There's not a lot going on this time of year, and we just want to do something quarterly that's fun for the family," said Tammy Eddy of Tammy Eddy Antiques and Gifts on Bank Street Northeast.

Stores will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., and there will be drawings for 10 percent to 50 percent discounts.

On Second Avenue Southeast next to Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts, there will be a moonbounce, balloons, free Pepsi, face painting and children's games.

From 4 to 6 p.m. musicians, ranging from jazz to contemporary Christian to rock, will perform at 11 businesses.

These include Albany Framing, Albany Gifts, Simp McGhee's, Maria Bonita, Café 113, Emiron Music, Bank Street Antiques, Sam Frank & Moore, Tammy Eddy Antiques and Chick Peas.

The Princess will present "The Music Man" at 7:30.

At 10 p.m. at Maria Bonita, organizers will have a drawing for a $500 gift certificate that can be spent at downtown merchants.
