Maybe a clerk’s immediate response to being told she was being robbed was appropriate.

Her hesitation prompted the robber, who had his hand in his pocket, pretending to have a gun, to say, “Ma’am, you just gon’ look at me like I’m crazy?”

A surveillance camera captured the entire exchange on tape.

Decatur police said tips from readers and viewers who saw video and photos of the robber helped them catch him quickly.

Police said Friday that they arrested and charged Samuel Jasper Thornton, 30, of 806 Tammy St. S.W. with first-degree robbery in Tuesday night’s robbery to the Wally World convenience store on Spring Avenue Southwest.

At least one reader had called The Daily to suggest Thornton as the robber.

Thornton was being held Saturday in Morgan County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.

During the stick-up, the robber had made it appear he was wielding a gun by placing his hand in his coat pocket and resting it on the counter, police said.
