Deputy shoots, kills Decatur man after attack

HUNTSVILLE (AP) — A Madison County deputy shot and killed a Decatur man after the man hit the deputy in the head with a wooden post, a sheriffs investigator said.

Investigator Chad Brooks said 22-year-old Jorge Quiroz Sargado was fatally shot about
5 a.m. Saturday when deputies responded to an alarm call at L&L Lumber, just outside the Huntsville city limits.

Brooks said Sargado came out swinging a 4-inch-by-4-inch piece of lumber. The deputy was struck in the head and fired one shot, hitting Sargado, who attacked a second deputy with a belt before being restrained.

Sargado was taken to Hunts-ville Hospital, where he later died in surgery. The two dep-uties were treated for their injuries and released.

Brooks would not identify the deputies involved in the shooting. Both deputies have been put on paid administrative leave as a matter of policy, he said.

A shooting review board has been tentatively set for Tuesday to look into the shooting.

Sargado also had worked under the name Raul Valencia for the past year in Huntsville.
