Woman charged with forging late ex-husband’s checks

COURTLAND — A woman took advantage of her ex-husband’s death by stealing his checkbook from his home and passing 16 forged checks, said Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department investigator Tim McWhorter.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Patricia Smallwood, 58, of 3556 Jefferson St., Courtland, on March 5 and charged her with 16 counts of second-degree forgery.

She also faces charges of third-degree receiving stolen property for selling a boat that had belonged to the deceased.

The couple had divorced in 2000, said McWhorter.

“He got sick and passed away in 2006. She had access to his house and was able to get his checkbook.”

McWhorter didn’t have an exact figure but said Smallwood forged thousands of dollars in checks.

The Lawrence County Jail released Smallwood on March 5 on $16,500 bond.
