Robber loses tug-of-war with shopper in Decatur

A purse snatcher went away empty-handed despite dragging a woman through the parking lot of Colonial Mall on Saturday, Decatur police said.

Laurie Fraser, 46, of Decatur told police she was walking to her car at about 5 p.m. when a man came up behind her and grabbed her purse and shopping bags.

The robber pulled the bags, dragging Fraser to the ground, but Fraser wouldn’t let go, said Sgt. Steve Campbell, a police spokesman.

“He pulled her partway across the parking lot and even dragged her under a (parked) car. He finally let her go and ran away,” Campbell said.

‘Very brave’

“While this was very brave on her part, we don’t recommend that sort of response. We recommend that when somebody does that, you give over the articles they want because the danger far outweighs the value of any articles they steal,” Campbell said.

Fraser suffered scrapes and bruises on her legs, but she refused medical treatment, police said.
