A fight broke out when the owner of a beauty supply store confronted a shoplifter, Decatur police said Tuesday.

A black male tried to steal six bottles of shampoo from Y’s Beauty Supply, 1508 W. Moulton St., shortly after noon Wednesday, police said.

The store’s owner, Kyu Sok Shin, 43, grabbed the man as he left the store and pulled him back in, police said.

The man threw down the shampoo and grabbed Shin, throwing him to the ground and punching him several times.

When the man attempted to get away on a bicycle, Shin tried to stop him. The man hit Shin in the face with the bicycle, forcing Shin to back down, police said.

The man was last seen riding towards Adams Drive. The thief was described as about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 150 pounds. He was wearing a Michigan pullover and a Penn State hat until Shin pulled them off during the struggle.

Police said the struggle turned the theft into robbery.

Shin suffered a cut over his eye. He was taken to Decatur General Hospital, where he was treated and released.
