Police now say Northport man's death not suicide

TUSCALOOSA (AP) — A Northport man who died from what investigators initially thought was a self-inflicted gunshot wound was actually shot by someone else who claimed the gun discharged accidentally, authorities said.

Capt. Loyd Baker, commander of the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit, said Jeff Durie, 33, was shot by another person on March 4 at his home in the Northwind Circle neighborhood.

"The initial investigation appeared that it could have been self-inflicted, but closer examination and an autopsy revealed that it was not," Baker told The Tuscaloosa News in a story Wednesday.

Baker said the shooter had not been charged with a crime. The case will go before a grand jury.
