Medical examination of a bruised baby resulted in a charge of child abuse against the father, Decatur police said Thursday.
A Morgan County grand jury returned an indictment against Travis Raymoore Rodgers, 23, of 5512 Old Moulton Road S.W. charging him with the Jan. 10 beating of his infant son.
The 9-month-old was taken to Parkway Medical Center with injuries including bruising to both sides of the face, both ears and a cut that tore the tongue leader from the lower part of the infant's mouth, said Sgt. Terry White of the Special Victims Unit.
Rodgers told police, who were called by hospital staff, that the infant had fallen from a bed, White said.
White said an emergency room doctor and a pediatrician concurred that the injuries were not consistent with the story but were consistent with abuse.
The evidence presented to a grand jury resulted in Rodgers' indictment.
An indictment contains only charges. Defendants are considered innocent and it is the prosecution's burden to prove guilt.
Rodgers remained in Morgan County Jail on Thursday in lieu of $10,000 bond.
According to news reports, the baby is in the custody of the Department of Human Resources.
