Limestone’s honor band to perform for free Tuesday

TANNER — Hear Limestone County’s best band students perform a free concert Tuesday. The 11th annual Limestone County Honor Band will perform at Tanner High School’s new gym at 7 p.m. Students from the county’s six high school bands compete to perform in the group.

This year’s guest conductor is John Cooper from Austin High School in Decatur.

Corporate spelling bee competition is Saturday in Athens

ATHENS — Ten teams have signed up for Saturday’s annual corporate spelling bee, and there’s room for more.

The Learn-to-Read Council of Athens and Limestone County sponsors the bee, which raises money for its adult literacy programs. Three-person teams compete, with sponsors paying $300 per team.

Rhonda Andrews, council director, said she can accept additional teams through the middle of this week. E-mail the council at ltr@hiwaay.net, or call 230-3050 or 998-0708.

Teams already involved represent the Limestone County Department of Human Resources, Quad-Plex Office Buildings, Catholic High School, accountant Walter Vice with lawyer E. Steve Croomes, Limestone Veterinary Clinic, Athens Rotary Club, The Decatur Daily, Athens State University, Reliance Bank of Athens and SirsiDynix.

The bee will start at 10 a.m. in the Athens High School cafeteria.
