Spring compost giveaway returning on Wednesday

Grab your shovels because the annual spring compost giveaway returns Wednesday and Thursday.

The compost consists of decomposed grass clippings, leaves and brush, which workers chipped, windrowed and turned regularly.

It is clean and suitable for flowerbeds and vegetable gardens, officials said.

City dump trucks will unload the compost in the Wilson Morgan Park parking lot at the Sandlin Road Southwest entrance, next to the softball fields.

Only private users can collect the compost.

It is not intended for resale.

Compost also is available year-round at the Decatur-Morgan County Landfill on Alabama 20 West.

It is free to residents who load it themselves.

The landfill will load it on trucks larger than one ton for $4 per ton.

The landfill is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7 to 11:30 a.m.
