Fire at airport destroys car

A pilot and his daughter returned to the Lawrence County Airport in Courtland from a midday flight to find their Jeep completely destroyed in a fire Tuesday.

John Mosely rented a county hanger Tuesday morning to store his Jeep and left for a short trip at about 10:45 a.m.

Shortly after departure, his vehicle went up in flames, said Tennessee Valley Aero manager Kari Rogers. Employees at Lockheed Martin spotted smoke coming from the hanger and contacted Tennessee Valley Aero.

The North Courtland Volunteer Fire Department responded and removed the vehicle from the hanger but not before the fire destroyed the Jeep and caused minor damage to another vehicle inside the hanger.

The hanger was untouched and no one was injured, said Rogers. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
