3 hurt, 4 charged in fight over soccer game
HUNTSVILLE (AP) — A pickup soccer game at an elementary school after class hours turned violent, with two men stabbed, one shot and authorities holding or seeking a half-dozen suspects.
Authorities said four men, all relatives, were in custody Tuesday charged with attempted murder. Police were seeking two other suspects.
Police said the investigation was complicated by language barriers; everyone involved is believed to be in the United States illegally, said Wendell Johnson, a police spokesman.
None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, he said.
The fight, which occurred Monday evening at a field outside University Place Elementary School, stemmed from a March 19 confrontation between two groups of men who gathered to play soccer.
"The one group said, `When you come back we're going to get you,"' said Johnson.
Rufino Valdivia, 38, was stabbed multiple times; Jose Soto, 26, was cut; and Gabriel Carillo, 26, was shot in the neck, Johnson said. All three men were taken by ambulance to Huntsville Hospital.
Police arrested Victor Xancopinca, 30; Miguel Xancopinca, 26; Oscar Xancopinca, 28; and Daniel Xancopinca, 21; on three counts each of attempted murder.
Officers located the men — several of whom worked in restaurants — late Monday or early Tuesday.
Authorities were searching for two more men who are related to the other suspects, Johnson said.
Carillo, who was shot, was found by emergency workers on the edge of a playground and ball fields near the back of the school.
The two men who were cut ran across the fields toward the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus.
One man climbed over a fence and was found behind Roberts Hall on the UAH campus.
