Longtime minister Robert Slack dies

The Rev. Robert R. Slack Jr., a longtime Baptist leader in Morgan County, died Thursday at Parkway Medical Center in Decatur.
Slack, 81, served as associational missionary, now called director of missions, for Morgan Baptist Association from 1957 to 1961.
He and his wife, Mary Dell Slack, celebrated their 63rd anniversary in March. She said he had been in treatment for cancer.
Slack, who lived on Perkins Wood Road near Hartselle, was pastor of eight local churches and spoke in 206 churches over 56 years of ministry. He served as pastor of Danville, West Hartselle, First Austinville, Fellowship, Blue Springs, Gum Springs, Point Mallard Parkway and Ryan Baptist churches, all in Morgan County.
He also was interim pastor at Oak Forest, Walnut Grove and New Canaan Baptist churches. He previously served two Mississippi congregations.
Slack also worked at funeral homes as a bi-vocational minister, including Shelton Funeral Home in Decatur and Peck Funeral Home in Hartselle.
Slack served as clerk of the association for 21 years and was a member of the executive board of the Alabama Baptist State Convention for 11 years.
Funeral for Slack will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at East Highland Baptist Church in Hartselle. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home.
Slack is also survived by a son, Robert Edward Slack of Hartselle; two daughters, Sue Hayes of Hartselle and Martha Dell Mooney of Decatur; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
