Red Cross heroes out to raise $32k in disaster funds

By Paul Huggins

The 2007 Heroes for American Red Cross Campaign is under way, and 32 heroes from Morgan and Lawrence counties will spend the next three weeks attempting to raise $1,000 apiece.

They will use techniques like selling Red Cross squares; contacting friends, neighbors and business acquaintances; and holding fundraisers.

That money will help fund an array of Red Cross disaster services, from helping feed, clothe and shelter disaster victims to training people to assist those victims.

For example, $1,000 can provide 571 comfort kits full of personal-care items for disaster victims who have lost their homes, provide groceries for eight families who have lost their homes to fires or natural disasters or provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation training for 29 volunteers.

The annual campaign is a short, fast-paced, grass-roots effort in which companies, church groups, civic clubs and individuals pledge to raise funds for local Red Cross programs and services. Last year, 37 heroes raised $28,112 in three weeks. The 2005 effort brought in a little more than $20,000.

Corporate sponsors for this year’s campaign are Joe Wheeler Electric Membership Corp., 3M, Cargill and Wayne Farms. This year’s heroes are:
