Newcomers place first in spelling bee

ATHENS — Newcomers to the Learn to Read Council’s corporate spelling bee Saturday won the annual competition in the 13th round.

The team representing the offices of accountant Walter Vice and attorney E. Steven Croomes beat last year’s winners, The Decatur Daily team, and eight others by correctly spelling “piqued.” The Daily took the second-place prize.

The winning team included Betty Croomes, Steven Croomes, Kristin Keimig and alternate Sam Anderson.

Other teams represented the Athens Rotary Club, the Limestone Department of Human Resources, Athens State University, Limestone Veterinary Clinic, Catholic High School, the Quad-Plex, Reliance Bank and SrsiDynix.

The spelling bee raises money to support services for clients in basic reading, English as a second language and after-school tutoring, said Rhonda Andrews, the council’s executive director.
