Police arrest 8 in 2 drug busts

Two separate drug busts by Decatur police resulted in eight arrests Friday.
In one case, the Organized Crime Unit obtained warrants and searched residences at 322 12th Ave. N.W. and 2403 Kelly Ave. S.W., Apartment 2.
Agents found more than 28 grams of crack cocaine, powder cocaine, marijuana, paraphernalia for drug sales and drug use, and two semi-automatic handguns, according to a press release.
Police stopped one of the suspects, Vernon Jamar Brinkley, 29, who lived at the Kelly Avenue apartment, as he was leaving the 12th Avenue address.
Brinkley faces the charge of trafficking cocaine. He remained in Decatur City Jail with bond set at $100,000.
The searches also led to the arrest of Orlandus Lamont Swoopes, 18, of 1001 Benford Drive S.W. He faces charges of possession of a controlled substance and second-degree possession of marijuana. Morgan County Jail released him on $1,250 bond.
Police charged a third man with the misdemeanor of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released from the city jail on $500 bond.
In the second case, agents searched Apartment 307 at 1321 Towerview St. S.W. They seized powder cocaine, marijuana and paraphernalia for drug sales and drug use.
Police charged Stephen Horace Britt, 27, of 1321 Towerview St. S.W., Apartment 307, with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Morgan County Jail released him on $1,250 bond. Police also charged three men and one woman with misdemeanor drug-related charges. Each was released from the city jail after posting $500 bond.
