Sittason only applicant for Hartselle schools post

By Deangelo McDaniel 340-2469

HARTSELLE — Council President Kenny Thompson said the council will probably reappoint Jennifer Sittason to the Hartselle school board April 10.

The deadline to apply for the board ended Friday, and she was the only applicant. Hartselle has to make the appointment before May 1.

Sittason, a 1985 Hartselle graduate, has a master's degree in counseling from The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The current administration appointed her in August 2005 to serve the remainder of Ronnie Abercrombie's term. He resigned in June 2005.

Sittason is chairman of a committee that is trying to persuade voters to pass a 12.5-mill property tax increase for a new Hartselle High.

"This is one of the reasons we need her back on the board," Thompson said.

Thompson and council members Samie Wiley and Bill Drake will have to approve the appointment.

Councilman Bill Smelser recused himself from voting in 2005 because he is related to Sittason.

Councilman Mark Mizell is abstaining from voting on board appointments because of a possible conflict of interest.

Mizell owns a sporting goods store that may bid on school projects. He is waiting on a legal opinion from the attorney general.
