HARTSELLE — Investigators arrested a teenager on charges of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl, Morgan County Chief Deputy Mike Corley said Monday.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a call to a residence at 10 Jones Road N.W., shortly after midnight Sunday, Corley said.
The assault took place at the residence, where the suspect, 18-year-old Bobby Lynn Knight II, lived, Corley said.
The victim was spending the night there, Corley said.
Investigators gathered evidence at the residence and spoke with Knight and the child's guardians before charging Knight with first-degree attempted rape and sexual abuse of a child under 12, both Class B felonies.
He was taken to Morgan County Jail and held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
A guardian took the child to Decatur General Hospital, where further evidence was collected, Corley said.
The child was treated and released.
The abuse came to light when "the guardian became suspicious as to the child's demeanor or conduct and began to question the child. That's when it became obvious that something had went on there and they called us," Corley said. "The male and female adults there at the residence did everything they should have done. They were very cooperative."
