Letting guard down

Decatur firefighters remove an arm from a railroad crossing gate on Alabama 20 West on Friday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a 911 call about a sound like an explosion to find wind apparently blew the arm on the westbound lanes into power lines, causing a malfunction, said Fire Marshal Darwin Clark.

Clark said firefighters were removing the guards and police would direct traffic until the crossing could be repaired.
