Trial May 14 for 2 charged in Cullman slaying

CULLMAN (AP) — A May 14 trial date has been set for two men charged with capital murder in the 2005 shooting death of 26-year-old Joseph Scott Laney of Logan.

Richard Anthony Martin, 23, of Addison, and Brent Cody Brown, 23, of Crane Hill, are accused of killing Laney during a robbery.

The trial has been pending for more than a year as prosecutors await forensic evidence from a state lab.

District Attorney Wilson Blaylock said the case remains a top priority for his office.

According to sheriff’s reports, Laney’s body was discovered Sept. 8, 2005 at his residence on County Road 831. He had been shot several times in the head with a .22-caliber revolver.

Laney was an employee at the REHAU North America plant at the time of his death.
