Man arrested in South Carolina, charged in shooting death of Alabama rapper

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A man wanted in the shooting death of an Alabama rap artist last month has been arrested in Columbia, the U.S. Marshal's Service said.

Courtney Smith, 28, of Montgomery, Ala., was arrested Friday afternoon by marshals and Richland County sheriff's deputies, the Marshal's Service said.

Smith is charged with murder and attempted murder in the March 25 shooting death of 25-year-old Eugene "Nawty Shawty" Smith of Montgomery and the wounding of another man, Montgomery police said.

The Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task force says it received information Smith might be in Columbia on Thursday night.

Marshal's and deputies surrounded the house Friday and contacted Smith inside. He surrendered without incident.

Hundreds of people attended Eugene Smith's funeral April 2.
