Firefighters hold Valhermoso Springs fire to bedroom

By Ronnie Thomas 340-2438

VALHERMOSO SPRINGS — Three firefighting units responded to a 12:15 p.m. call to a Valhermoso Springs residence Tuesday and contained the blaze to a front bedroom, according to Steve Edmonson, a Cotaco firefighter.

Edmonson, who was first on the scene with an engine truck, said when he arrived smoke was coming from underneath the eaves of the three-bedroom house at 7280 Alabama 36 E.

He said the resident, Sonya Kitchens, was not at home and that no one was injured.

"The whole exterior is rock," Edmonson said. "There was heat and smoke damage throughout the house. It was once the parsonage of Valhermoso Springs First Christian Church across the highway."

Edmonson said volunteer firefighters from Lacey's Spring and Brindley Mountain backed Cotaco.

"Somerville was on the way but we canceled them," Edmonson said. "We had 20 firefighters at the scene, three engines, one service truck and one rescue vehicle. We used about 400 gallons of water and cleared the scene at 1:32 p.m."

Edmonson said officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

He said the incident is another example of how well Morgan County firefighters work together.

"During the day, most volunteer departments are shorthanded because of work schedules," he said. "We don't mind assisting each other."
