A wreck on Brookline Avenue Southwest left 1,314 Decatur Utilities customers without power early Wednesday.

DU Dispatch Communications Supervisor Miles Wright said a vehicle hit a utility pole at 2:39 a.m. The collision broke the pole, damaged the dips where the underground feed comes out of the ground and required replacement of the transformer. It also tripped a breaker at the Westmeade substation.

Wright said this left custo-mers in Southwest residential areas behind Burger King and Beltline Church of Christ without power. DU restored 430 customers in 66 minutes, and another 868 got their power back in about two hours. Power did not return for 16 unlucky Brookline residents living near the accident site until 8:45 a.m.

Decatur police spokesman Lt. Chris Mathews said no informa-tion on the wreck was available.
