State officials to meet on storm preparations

MONTGOMERY (AP) — Gov. Bob Riley meets Monday with emergency officials on state plans for the June 1 start of hurricane season.

“We’re bringing all the key leaders together again to make sure our state is as prepared as we possibly can be for what is predicted to be an active hurricane season,” Riley said in a statement.

The planners, including representatives from state and federal agencies, will run through a simulated worst case scenario — a Category 5 hurricane hitting the coast near Bayou La Batre, the fishing village still recovering from Hurricane Katrina’s strike on Aug. 29, 2005.
