Gilbert named director of Decatur animal shelter

Decatur's animal shelter has a new director, following Thursday's appointment by the City Council.

Mindy Gilbert, a former contractor with the city, has helped revamp the shelter's administrative staff and design the $1 million renovation planned for a building on Beltline Road Southwest.

Councilman Ray Metzger voted against the measure, which had a provision that granted
the shelter director special permission to reside outside the city.

All other department heads hired after October 2000 must reside in Decatur within one year of their appointment.
