Alleged thief arrested after car runs out of gas

A thief didn’t make it far from the crime scene because he was low on gas, Decatur police said.

Gary Doyle Curtis’ vehicle coasted to a stop right in front of officers following Wednesday’s burglary, said Detective Jeremy Hayes.

Curtis, 39, woke up neighbors while stealing an air compressor from a home in the 900 block of Spring Court Southwest, Hayes said.

The neighbors, who knew Curtis by name, called police and described his vehicle and the direction he took.

Patrol officers Jonathon Lindley and Josh Matthews found Curtis, with the air compressor in his vehicle, coasting to a stop in the 700 block of Cedar Lake Road Southwest.

Investigators charged Curtis, of 2734 Mudd St., Lincoln, with third degree-burglary. He remained in Morgan County Jail on Thursday in lieu of $750 bond.
