Deadline for rodeo contests approaches

ATHENS — A belt buckle waits to be worn by the best little cowboy in the area.

The division winners of the annual Limestone Sheriff's Rodeo Cowboy Contest will receive a custom-made belt buckle. The contest is for ages 1 to 9. Upper divisions must display horsemanship skills.

"We want to find out who the legitimate cowboys are because only the best will get the buckles," said contest coordinator Debbie Blakely.

Little cowgirls have a division as well, and the winners in each division receive a tiara and banner.

"If girls want to continue competing on the pageant circuit, participating with us is a great way to get experience and exposure," Blakely said.

The deadline to enter either contest is noon Tuesday. Participants get to ride in the annual Rodeo Parade and are recognized at the Limestone Sheriff's Rodeo in May.

Applications and rules are available at the Sheriff's Department, Preston's Western Wear or online at www.limestonesheriffrodeo.com.

For more information, call the Sheriff's Department at 232-0111 and ask for Jennifer McBay.
