PACT Family Fun day to include youth talent competition
By Paul Huggins
A youth talent competition will be part of PACT’s Family Fun Day for the first time this year.
Besides the talent competition, Saturday’s annual fundraiser at Rhodes Ferry Park brings back the Diaper Derby and Toddler Trot, and organizers added children’s races.
Other activities include live musical entertainment, inflatable rides, games, children’s art village, tethered hot-air balloon rides and woodworking crafts presented by The Home Depot.
Activities begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m.
The talent contest is a preliminary to the Memphis Mid South Fair, and it features two ages. The junior division (ages 9 to 12) will compete at 11 a.m., and the senior division (ages 13 to 18) will compete at noon.
Contestants will compete in singing, dancing, or theatrical monologues. Winners advance to the Mid South Fair Youth Talent in Memphis in September.
The registration fee for the talent show is $20. To register, or for more information, call 355-7252.
The Toddler Trot and Diaper Derby will pit children age 4 or under in a 25-foot race. They will compete in five age categories with the Diaper Derby for crawlers only. Organizers also added running races for older children.
Races start at 11 a.m., and PACT requests a $5 donation for each competition.
Decatur Parks and Recreation, the event co-sponsor, will serve low cost hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks.
PACT started the event in 2003 as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Last year’s event raised $40,000, and the goal this year is $50,000.
