Refuge seeks comments about conservation plan

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service invites the public to learn more and share comments and concerns about the draft Comprehensive Conservation Plan and Environmental Assessment that will guide future management of Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge.

The plan describes four alternatives for managing the refuge complex over the next 15 years. This includes the main refuge between Decatur and Huntsville as well as satellite refuges in Jackson and Lauderdale counties.

Service officials will be at Wheeler Visitors Center on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. Copies of the draft plan will be available at the center headquarters and are already available at Decatur Public Library.

Written comments, requests for the plan or questions can be directed to John Beck, natural resource planner, at 2700 Refuge Headquarters Road, Decatur, AL 35603; or by phone at 353-7243, ext. 32. Send e-mail comments John_Beck@fws.gov or Wheeler@fws.gov.

The comment period will extend until May 21.
