OWENS — The former president of Owens Elementary School's booster club allegedly took up to $5,000 from the club, Sheriff Mike Blakely said.

Authorities charged Sherri Craig, 28, of 27447 Bain Road, Athens, with five counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument and one count of first-degree theft of property.

Owens Elementary is a kindergarten-through-fifth-grade school on Alabama 99 in the Owens community west of Athens.

Blakely said Craig allegedly wrote checks to "cash" and kept that money and also kept money she should have deposited into the club's account.

He did not know what she spent the money on because Craig has denied she took the money, he said.

Blakely said that 11/2 weeks ago other club officers noticed the bank account was low and reported their suspicions to the Sheriff's Department.
