Man beaten, left in street

A man was left lying in the street with a bloody head wound following an assault in a Southwest neighborhood Wednesday night, Decatur police said.

Emergency personnel responding to a call about a possible gunshot victim found the man lying on Third Avenue Southwest at Betty Street shortly before 8 p.m. Police Sgt. Tony Morgan said the victim, who had not been identified, had not been shot.

Instead, he appeared to have been clubbed with some sort of weapon during a fight with another man, Morgan said.

Police were investigating the incident, but no one had been taken into custody. An ambulance took the victim to Decatur General Hospital. His condition wasn't known.
