5 arrested following probe of drug ring

A yearlong investigation into a major drug distribution ring operating in Decatur came to a close this week, police said Thursday.

Sgt. Gerry Norris, commander of the Madison-Morgan County Strategic Counterdrug ( Team, said drug agents and Decatur police performed multiple raids Sunday, seizing substantial amounts of cocaine and marijuana and arresting five Decatur residents, including a mother and son.

Police arrested Cassius Leron Wheeler, 30, of 2125 Alabama 20 on four counts of trafficking in cocaine, two counts of distributing a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.

Wheeler’s mother, Linda Darnell Wheeler, 52, of 1207 Second St. S.W., faces a charge of first-degree possession of marijuana.

Police also arrested Erica Lashae Wiggins, 35, of 401 11th Ave. N.W., on a charge of first-degree possession of marijuana and Chrystal Louise Turner, 24, of 1907 Eighth St. S.W., on a charge of distribution of a controlled substance.

Cassius Wheeler’s cousin, Cashin Wheeler III, 23, of 1907 Eighth St. S.W., faces a charge of second-degree possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor.

Morgan County Jail released Cassius Wheeler on $13,750 bond, Linda Wheeler on $750 bond and Wiggins on $750 bond, all on Monday, and Turner on Sunday on $1,500 bond. Decatur City Jail released Cashin Wheeler III on Monday on $500 bond.

Decatur police said they did not know the exact amount of drugs seized in the searches. Officers with the STAC team in Huntsville did not return calls Thursday.
