Education In Brief

Barbee gets scholarship

Jason Barbee has been awarded the Academic Excellence Scholarship from The University of Alabama in Huntsville. Jason has also received a scholarship from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. He is a senior at Hartselle High School and is the son of Tim and Kathy Barbee.

Cochran gets scholarship

Zack Cochran of Danville has received a University of North Alabama Pride of Dixie band scholarship. He is a senior at Danville High School, where he plays percussion in the band, is percussion captain and is a member of the Beta Club. He is ranked fifth in his class and will graduate with honors. Cochran is the son of Bruce and Sandy Cochran.

Sigma Beta Delta

Leslie Morris of Hartselle has been inducted into the Judson College chapter of the Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society in Business. Inductees must have a grade point average in the top 20 percent of their classes and be active in campus activities.

Thompson honored

Jessica Thompson of Valhermoso Springs was inducted into the Cardinal Key and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies at The University of West Alabama. She serves on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, plays on the womenís basketball team and is involved in intramural sports.

She is a junior majoring in special education and is the daughter of Gary and Joy Thompson.

Lambda Sigma

Rebecca Ann Frank of Athens has been inducted into the Freshman Honor Society of Lambda Sigma at Auburn University. She also received an award for outstanding freshman in the College of Science and Mathematics at the annual Awards Day. She is a pre-pharmacy major.

She is a 2006 honors graduate of Athens High School and is the daughter of Steven and Lynn Frank.

Her grandparents are Carol McMurray of Athens and Paul and Shirley Matteson of Huntsville.

USAA honors Moon

Anthony J. Moon Jr. of Decatur has been named a United States National Award winner in English by the United States Achievement Academy. He is a sophomore at Austin High School and is the son of Barbara Bumpus and Anthony Moon Sr.

His grandparents are Gladys Moon and Theodore Bumpus, both of Decatur, and the late Mary Bumpus.

Phi Beta Kappa

Jenifer Dunn of Decatur has been inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society at The University of Alabama. She has also been named outstanding senior of the year by the Honors College dean of the Computer Based College Program and also received a scholarship to the college of education to pursue a degree in education administration, in addition to degrees in math and Spanish. She is a senior at the university and is a 2003 graduate of Austin High. Her parents are Kieth and Helen Dunn.

Sigma Alpha Lambda

Priscilla Neal of Eva has been inducted into the Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization at The University of Alabama. She is the daughter of William and Ellen Neal.

Mayes gets scholarship

Satin Mayes of Courtland has received a T.M. Rogers Jr. Endowed Scholarship from The University of North Alabama. She is a member of the Delta Mu Delta honor society and is on the deanís list. She is the daughter of Anthony and Shirley Mayes.

Delta Mu Delta inductees

These area students have been inducted into the University of North Alabama Eta Alpha chapter of the Delta Mu Delta business honor society. Satin Antionette Mayes of Courtland; Kathryn Dianne Rains of Decatur.

Barkley Bridge honor

Austin Blackmon was named to the ďAĒ honor roll at Barkley Bridge Elementary School for the fourth six weeks. Austin is in the fourth grade.

ASEF winners

These local students won prizes at the 2007 Alabama Science and Engineering Fair, held at The University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Junior Division: Medicine and Health, Laura Higdon, St. Ann School, third place; Behavioral and Social Sciences, Kathryn Turgeon, St. Ann School, third place.

Senior Division: Plant Science, Nathan Schiavone, Faith Christian Academy, third place; Teams, Torin Dupper and Mallory Anderson, Decatur High School, third place. Special Award winners:

Junior Division: Medicine and Health, Jessi Granone, St. Ann School, Boeing.

Senior Division: Plant Science, Nathan Schiavone, Faith Christian Academy, Boeing.

Boeing Company Best of Show, Junior Division: Ronnie Parker, Speake High School.

Mu Alpha Theta, Senior Division: Dustin Millwood, Masterís Hand Christian School.

Cornerstone open house

Cornerstone Christian School will have an open house Thursday evening from 5 to 7. Cornerstone classes include 5-year kindergarten through the 12th grade. The school is at 3211 Spring Ave. S.W. Parents interested in obtaining information about the school and meeting the faculty are invited. Refreshments will be served.

AAMA scholarships

These area students have received scholarships from the Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association. The scholarship assists students working towards a career/technical education certificate or associate degree in automotive manufacturing.
