Driver allegedly runs over Decatur man during argument

By Seth Burkett 340-2355

Police chased down a suspect after he allegedly ran over another man with his van during an argument Tuesday night, Decatur police said.

Officers responding to the 9:30 p.m. call found the victim, Hernandez Kusinksi Gray, near 1212 North St. S.E. with cuts on his arms, face and hands. He was taken to Decatur General Hospital for treatment.

Police stopped the van's
driver, Hunter Blaine Sherrill, 38, of 1811 Woodmont Drive S.E., in the 1900 block of Ninth Street Southeast, and arrested him on charges of driving under the influence and attempting to elude officers. Investigators later charged him with second-degree assault.

Lt. Chris Mathews, a police spokesman, said witnesses told police Sherrill pulled his van in front of 1220 North St. and Gray walked up. Sherrill allegedly got out holding a knife and began to argue with Gray, Mathews said.

Sherrill got back into the van and drove forward, running over Gray, dragging him several feet and rolling him underneath the van, Mathews said.

Sherrill left the area and initially refused to pull over for police.

Morgan County Jail released Sherrill on Wednesday on $11,000 bond.
